Chapter Twelve

“Well, that ought to do it,” the customer at the front counter said and chuckled. “I’m about to spend more money on candy than I ever imagined I would for Valentine’s Day.”

I grinned at her. “Do you live here in town?”

She shook her head. “No, but I had business over in Truckee and decided that I had to make a stop by the candy store. I love this place. I never miss the Halloween season, and now that I see all the wonderful goodies you’ve got for Valentine’s Day, I may never miss another Valentine’s Day.”

I laughed. “We would love to see you come back every Valentine’s Day. But don’t wait for a holiday, just stop in anytime. We’ve always got a huge variety of candy to try out.” I pushed the paper shopping bag across the counter to her. She had bought three pounds of fudge, four Valentine hearts filled with assorted chocolates, a handful of lollipops, and a pound of cherry-flavored saltwater taffy.

She nodded. “My husband would have a fit if he knew how much money I spent in here today. Don’t tell him.”

I shook my head. “I won’t tell a soul.”

She chuckled. “Thank you. And I’ll see you again during the Halloween season.”

“You have a good Valentine’s Day,” I said to her and turned and looked at my mother as she carried a tray of raspberry vanilla swirl fudge to the display case. “Things are going well?”

I nodded. “Things are going stunningly well. I know it’s Valentine’s Day, but I’m still amazed at how well we’re doing with both online sales and here in the store.”

She opened the back of the display case and took out the empty tray, and replaced it with the full one, and closed the door again. “It amazes me, too. I’m also excited about all the different types of candy we’ve been making.”

“I love the holidays. Working here is a lot more fun when we’ve got a holiday to prepare for,” I said and followed Mom back to the kitchen. I had been worried that the snow would put a damper on our sales, but it seemed that no one was going to be denied their candy for the upcoming holiday.

Carrie stirred a pan of caramel on the stove and turned to look at me. “This place smells so good.”

She was right. The smell of chocolate filled the entire shop. I knew I had been eating far too much candy over the past several days, but it was all so good that I couldn’t resist. I picked up a cherry-flavored marshmallow that was drying on a rack and popped it into my mouth. “Oh, this is really good.”

“I was pleased with how those came out,” Mom said.

Linda was packing an order, and she turned to look at me. “Mia, has Ethan found Michelle Vance’s killer yet?”

“He’s still working the case.”

She nodded. “You know, I completely forgot, but I saw Michelle out with a man about two weeks ago. They were at a restaurant over in Tahoe.
